A MIDI file player that runs entirely in your browser

What is a MIDI file?

A MIDI file is not a recording — it contains no sound at all. Instead, it stores musical instructions: which notes to play, exactly when to play them, how hard to strike them, and on which instrument channel. That is why a .mid file holding a full song can be just a few kilobytes. Because the file only describes a performance, every MIDI file player has to synthesize the sound itself, and two players can render the same file a little differently.

How to play MIDI files online

With MidiGlow you can play MIDI files online without installing anything. Drop a .mid or .midi file onto the tool above — or press Choose a MIDI file — and this MIDI player online parses it in a second or two. Press Play to hear it, drag the timeline to jump around, slow a difficult passage down to half speed or push it to double speed, loop any section between two points, and mute or solo individual tracks to hear exactly what each part is doing. No account, no download, no setup.

How MIDI visualization works

As the song plays, MidiGlow turns those note instructions into a glowing MIDI visualizer. Every note becomes a bar that falls toward a piano keyboard, and the moment it crosses the strike line is the moment you hear it, so your eyes and ears stay perfectly in sync. Tracks get stable colors, active keys light up, and each strike releases a small burst of particles. Three themes — Glow, Neon and Aurora — change the mood, and the time-window zoom controls how many seconds of music you see at once. You can even record the performance and export it as a video, right in the browser.

Why your files stay private

Everything MidiGlow does — parsing, synthesis, visualization and video export — happens inside your browser using the Web Audio and Canvas APIs. Your MIDI files are never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never seen by anyone else; close the tab and the session is gone. That makes this MIDI file player safe for unreleased compositions, client work, and teaching material alike.
